If you've ever considered dermaplaning, you've probably heard the myth: "Won't my hair grow back thicker?" The short answer is no. Dermaplaning is a safe, non-invasive skincare treatment that offers many benefits without changing the texture or thickness of your hair.
What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation treatment performed using a sterile surgical blade to gently remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This process reveals a smoother, brighter complexion and allows skincare products to penetrate more effectively.
During treatment, the blade may also remove some of the fine, soft facial hair commonly known as "peach fuzz" (vellus hair). However, it's important to understand that the primary purpose of dermaplaning is exfoliation, not hair removal.
Does Dermaplaning Remove All Peach Fuzz?
Not always.
While many clients notice a reduction in facial fuzz after treatment, dermaplaning does not always remove every fine hair. The main goal of the procedure is to remove the buildup of dead skin cells that can leave skin looking dull, rough, or uneven. Any hair removal that occurs is simply an added benefit.
Because facial hair grows in different directions and varies in texture and density, some fine hairs may remain after treatment.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
Instantly Smoother Skin
Removing surface dead skin cells leaves the skin feeling exceptionally soft and smooth.
Brighter, More Radiant Complexion
Exfoliation helps reveal fresh, healthy skin, resulting in an immediate glow.
Improved Product Absorption
Without layers of dead skin blocking absorption, serums, moisturizers, and treatment products can penetrate more effectively.
Enhanced Makeup Application
Foundation and other makeup products tend to apply more evenly and smoothly on freshly exfoliated skin.
Reduction in the Appearance of Fine Lines and Mild Acne Scarring
Regular treatments can help soften the appearance of superficial acne scars and fine lines over time.
Gentle, Non-Chemical Exfoliation
Dermaplaning is an excellent option for individuals who may not tolerate certain chemical exfoliants.
Will My Hair Grow Back Thicker or Darker?
No. This is one of the most common misconceptions about dermaplaning.
Dermaplaning only removes hair at the surface of the skin and does not affect the hair follicle beneath the skin. Because the follicle remains unchanged, the hair will grow back exactly as it was before—same color, same texture, and same rate of growth.
Many people perceive the hair as feeling different when it first grows back simply because the hair has been cut bluntly at the surface. As it continues to grow, it returns to its natural soft texture.
Dermaplaning Aftercare: How to Protect Your Fresh Glow
Following proper aftercare is essential to maintain your results and keep your skin healthy after dermaplaning. Because the treatment removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells, your skin may be more sensitive to environmental factors, especially UV exposure.
Aftercare Musts:
Wear a mineral sunscreen daily. (As always!) Freshly exfoliated skin is more susceptible to sun damage, so applying a broad-spectrum mineral SPF of 30 or higher every morning is non-negotiable.
Keep skin well hydrated. Use nourishing serums and moisturizers to support your skin barrier and maintain a healthy glow. Also, remember to drink enough water daily.
Avoid excessive sun exposure for several days following treatment and wear a hat when spending extended time outdoors.
Skip harsh exfoliants for 3–5 days. Avoid scrubs, strong acids, retinoids, and other potentially irritating products while your skin recovers.
Avoid picking or over-touching the skin. Allow your freshly exfoliated skin to heal and renew naturally.
With proper aftercare, you'll enjoy smoother, brighter, and healthier-looking skin for weeks to come.
